Act of War
The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation

Viewer Feedback

Last night I saw the video on the overthrow of the Hawaiian government and it broke my heart.

I felt guilty watching the video because I realized we go to the islands to enjoy but never give a thought to the awful price paid by the Hawaiian people for our pleasure. Something must be done to recompense the Hawaiian people for the terrible wrong we inflicted upon them, when the only thing they ever did was accept and love us.

Everyone who has a conscience should see it.

I watched your documentary on Channel 60 in San Mateo...the information and facts are well presented, which should be part of history classes everywhere.

Hawaiian people who are of original tribes should make this story known all over the world.

Your work is excellent and I greatly appreciate your determination for seeking the truth and its exposure. Please continue your work and know that you are not alone in the struggle.

Wish I was there myself to give you whatever help you need, as I believe in your cause, despite my growing up sequestered among Punahou elitists. It wasn't actually until I began the research for my book a couple of years ago that I realized the brutality with which Hawai'i was treated.

We are moving to the mainland after 20 years on Maui and O'ahu. When our new neighbors and family ask about Hawai'i, we intend to answer with an offer of an in-depth exploration-beyond HVB portrayal of our islands as Paradise.

This video is essential...thank you for making this kind of presentation possible.

I want you to know that many Americans...know that your land was stolen from you. We want you to get it back for all the Hawaiian people. It belongs to you.

I write this letter to encourage your fight and to let you know you are not alone. We (some) Americans do know right from wrong. Some of us are willing to fight for your rights with you.

I am a native Hawaiian of Japanese ancestry and support the idea of going after the U.S. Govt and the Big Five-including Bishop Estate and First Hawaiian Bank, to compensate the original native Hawaiians' children for what they did and are still doing to them.

This ("ACT OF WAR"), in my opinion, is the finest portrayal of "manifest destiny" that I have ever seen. It is an historical parallel to the rape also of the Philippines...

This is redolent of the systematic subjugation of Native Americans, all over the Northern and Southern American hemisphere. Please, I beg of you, show this Hawaiian historical film over again and again. This is a great history lesson for American students.

"ACT OF WAR" was broadcast several times...by KLCS, Los Angeles.

It has, to me, a technical excellence and a historical narrative that is both revealing and compelling. Not having considered these issues and implications through years of school at Likelike Elementary, Kalakaua Intermediate, Farrington High and the University of Hawai'i, Manoa campus, they are all the more challenging to me.

I suppose time will tell concerning the course and results of your endeavors. Perhaps a feature film would bring additional widespread media recognition.

I saw the documentary last week on Boston public television. As a haole who grew up partly in Hawai'i, and attended the University of Hawai'i, I was deeply moved by it-and surprised to see it actually pass the censors and air on mainstream TV.

Please know that your program touched me deeply, filled me with fury at the "history" that mainland students get regarding Hawai'i, and encourages me to help make a difference in how that history is taught. Thank you for helping me help future teachers.

I recently viewed "Act of War" on Boston's WGBX. I am anxious to incorporate this excellent production into the World Culture curriculum...in our alternative high school here...As a displaced citizen of Hawai'i and former teacher of Modern Hawaiian history, I am convinced that the story of what transpired in Hawai'i is an important element in attaining any thorough understanding of American history.

I am the black guy who saw your wonderful videos on the spirit of the Hawaiians and the destruction brought to your homeland by these crazy Americans. I sure hope you all take your sacred islands back.

I wish to congratulate you and thank you for the education and enlightenment attained from the...tape. I would bet that the majority of history teachers in the continental U.S. have no idea about the truth of Hawaiian history and the tragedy of its annexation. All my colleagues had no knowledge about this here in Miami.

I had been totally unaware of the circumstances under which Hawai'i was taken over. In fact, I have decided to make this my term paper topic.

My compliments to you...on the outstanding quality of your presentation. It is a word that needs to get out and your efforts should go far toward that end.

It...is an excellent program and very enlightening concerning the despicable way the USA treated the beautiful country of Hawai'i.

I am ashamed of being an American!

I was...teary-eyed after watching your "Act of War" on PBS here in the Los Angeles area...Remember, being an American of Mexican extraction, history has been written how most of the western U.S. once belonged to Mexico...The KEY word being HIS STORY! Just look at what the U.S. did to the American Indian!

This...made a lot of the stories that our tutu and tutu papa told us as children come to life for me once again...we're coming home to join in the fight for our dignity.

I teach 8th (grade) U.S. History in California...I will use it in conjunction with teaching of Manifest Destiny and how the American government acquired (by war, stealing, legal and illegal taking) lands from Native Americans...

The video is great. Very powerful.

I want to tell you that your production was outstanding, very well presented...Everything I saw on your television program, shown here in Chicago last night, was superb-great production work throughout, and you brought many tears to the makas of this old Hilo boy.

I saw this documentary last month and was fascinated by its power and the unvarnished glimpse of the American-Hawaiian relationships. Things have not changed one bit.
