Hui Na'auao

In 1992, a year before the centennial observance of the overthrow of the Hawaiian nation in 1893, a coalition of over forty Hawaiian organizations got together to educate themselves and the public on the historical basis for the movement toward sovereignty and independence. They took the name Hui Na'auao, referring to a "group seeking wisdom or enlightenment." This program presents some of the members of this coalition and their ideas on what self-determination means.

Rare turn-of-the-century archival film footage and photographs are contrasted with modern-day scenes of rallies, evictions, arrests and political events.

The inspiring "Sovereignty Song," by Peter Apo and Jeff Rasmussen is woven together with the words of contemporary Hawaiians in this program, which is a plea for world recognition of Hawai'i as a member of the family of nations.
