Kaleipua Pahulehua
Na Hulu Kupuna series

Na Hulu Kupuna is a series of video portraits featuring Hawaiians of the kupuna (grandparent) generation sharing knowledge and stories in their native tongue.

In this program, interviewer Tuti Kanahele visits with Kaleipua Pahulehua, originally a native of the island Ni'ihau, who makes her home on Kaua'i.

Following a long-established tradition taught to her as a young girl, Kaleipua makes shell lei, the famous pupu o Ni'ihau. The beauty of the lei are brought out as she presents and names the various kinds of shells and the different techniques for stringing the lei.

Includes aerial footage of the island of Ni'ihau.
